Internet coverage on the island

Despite being a small island off the coast of Cancun, Isla Mujeres still provides a wide range of internet options for holiday goers or digital nomads.

Digital nomads moving to Isla Mujeres will be curious about the quality of the WIFI on the island. They need high-quality speeds to ensure their work gets completed on time.

Typically, WIFI connection speeds here are fast, varying between 5-30mbps.

Despite a lack of specific co-working spaces, many Isla Mujeres internet options exist for working on the island.

These include hostels, cafes, and one co-working space. Those visiting the island on holiday also have great Wi-Fi options in hotels and resorts.

Coworking spaces

Selina Isla Mujeres

Selina Isla Mujeres

Selina Isla Mujeres is the only co-working space on the island and naturally the busiest. Sometimes this space becomes full, so consider only using it at off-peak times.

The WIFI here levels out around 13mbps for both upload and download speeds. Selina also offers a co-working package with a longer-term option, including co-working and sleeping options.

Pros:

  • Selina Isla Mujeres is the only co-working space in Isla Mujeres.
  • The WIFI speed is suitable for work, at around 13mbps for both upload and download speeds.
  • Selina offers long-term packages.

Cons:

  • Sometimes this space becomes full.

Hostels

You can find fast and reliable WIFI at some of the cheap rentals in Isla Mujeres.

Nomads Hostel

Nomads Hostel is the most popular hostel on the island. It, too is often busy.

Many people working as digital nomads on the island take advantage of the tables and access the WIFI here. The WIFI here is fast and settles around 30mbps.

Pros:

  • There are plenty of other workers to meet.
  • The WIFI is fast, at 30mbps.

Cons:

  • It often gets very busy.

Les Trois Singes

Les Trois Singes is another hostel available on the island. It’s an affordable option that provides WIFI and shared spaces that can be used to work.

In addition, the hostel also provides night-time activities such as bars and parties that could be a welcome break from working in the evening.

Pros:

  • Affordable.
  • Includes night-time activities.

Cons:

  • Slow WIFI.

Coffee shops

Polo’s Mango Café

Polo’s Mango Café is a popular café on the island. It boasts great food and fast WIFI.

One thing to take into account is the heat at the restaurant; this can be counteracted by sitting upstairs.

Pros:

  • Great food is available.
  • Fast WIFI.

Cons:

  • The downstairs area gets hot.

North Garden

North Garden is another coffee shop with Wifi.  However, the WIFI speed here is poor, with speeds around 10mbps so consider this when working here.

Pros:

  • Attentive staff.

Cons:

  • Slow WIFI, at 10mbps.

Café Mogagua

Café Mogagua
Café Mogagua

This café has the best internet in Isla Mujeres. It also serves food and a considerably large option of coffees and beverages.

In addition, Café Mogagua allows customers to stay a long time to work. Remember this before entering other cafes or spaces, as some may want people to move along quicker.

Pros:

  • Very fast WIFI.
  • Nice seating and decorations.
  • Vegan food options.

Cons:

  • Unattentive serve.

Hotels

Another option for WIFI on the island is in hotels. Many hotels on the island provide free WIFI to hotel guests.

There are over 100 options for hotels on the island. These range from affordable hostels to luxury hotels and resorts.

Make sure to check before booking that the WIFI is either free or available to purchase. This is also a great option for those just on holiday on the island.

La Vida Dulce

This hotel is especially popular with digital nomads who want to relax while working. Its fast WIFI speed is one of the main draws.

However, one thing to consider is the popularity of La Vida Dulce. This is a trendy hotel on Isla Mujeres, so finding availability can be difficult, especially in peak season.

Pros:

  • Fast WIFI.

Cons:

  • Limited availability during peak season.

Nautibeach Condos

Many digital nomads rent condos at Nautibeach. These cost around $500 a week and have WIFI available.

In addition, renting a condo or apartment gives you privacy. A quieter workspace may appeal to some remote workers, especially those regularly on calls.

Pros:

  • Fast WIFI.

Cons:

  • The beach club next doors is noisy at night.

Sim cards

For those trying to get coverage on their phone, sims can be bought on the island. The main service provider is Telcel, and 5GB of data can be bought for $15.

This is an option for anyone needing WIFI to work from their phone. However, many people may find that 5 GB of data doesn’t last very long.

For those on holiday, this may be enough data, especially when just used for catching up with family or looking for directions. But don’t count on sim cards if you’re planning on living in Isla Mujeres.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive.
  • Can be used anywhere.

Cons:

  • Does not include a space to work.

Coworking communities

CocoHub

Coworking communities are available worldwide, and Isla Mujeres is no exception. One example would be CocoHub, a community for digital nomads to work, connect and share experiences.

This is a great option to learn about the coworking scene on the island. People with experience there may be able to provide hidden gems to visit or work in.

Pros:

  • You can connect with digital nomads working on the island.

Cons:

  • Lack of privacy.
